How do I assign the right HS code to each product?
Match the product to the closest tariff line, save it on the catalogue item, and it flows onto every invoice.
The goal is to classify each product once, on the catalogue item, so cashiers never have to think about it.
Step by step
- Open your product/catalogue item.
- Use the HS Code Finder and search by what the product actually is (its material or function), not its brand name.
- Prefer the most specific 8-digit line that fits; if none fits precisely, use the closest 4-digit heading.
- Save the code on the item, along with its tax class.
Tips for choosing well
- Search the substance: "cooking oil" not "Sunfoil"; "cement" not the brand.
- Group similar products under the same code where they share a tariff line.
- When two codes seem to fit, pick the one that best matches the item's primary use.
